I want to surprise my daughter with new grips for her J frame .38 but I have no way of knowing which it is. Is it more likely that it would be round? When was the change made? I only saw it once, it has what appear to be the original wood grips and looks to be definitely not a newer model. I want to get her some larger grips to practice shooting it with a little less discomfort. Thanks in advance for any clues. |

The oversize Target grips will fit both round- and square-butt guns, and are great to use for, well...target practice ! __________________ Last edited by PatriotX; 12-13-2020 at 01:08 AM. |

Pachmayr makes (made?) a Presentation grip that will fit both RB and SB frames. Also a SB finger groove model that will fit on RB guns. Kaaskop49 |

Yes, they will fit any pre war I frame, any post war round or sq butt I and J frame pre model 1953, and all post 1953 I and J frames. __________________ |

It is most likely that her gun is a round butt. |

Ask her to send a pic and post it here. Make up a story. Tell her the forum has a thread....’show us your daughters j frame’. If she finds it a bit absurd, you can point to many far more absurd ones here. __________________ |

These Pachmayr Diamond Pro grips work really well with J-frames.

Round Butt is way more popular for J's. Just a guess of course, but I'd say 80% - 85% of J's are Round Butts. Maybe even higher. Now watch ...... you'll buy a RB set and she will be the exception! Last edited by chief38; 12-13-2020 at 04:30 PM. |

Just to throw a monkey wrench in the works, I offer this. Revolver stocks and pistol grips are pretty much a matter of personal choice. What works for one person may be totally unworkable for another when it comes to feel. Additionally, everyone has a different idea as to what looks right. For example, I personally think that the grips in post #2 are hideous, but that is just me. One man's trash, and all that. Maybe a gift certificate is a better choice. __________________ |

By Pachmayr Compacts. Get round and square. Return the wrong set. __________________ |

Another vote for the factory targets, smooth or checkered. I have them on several guns and find them to be far better than the magna J frame stocks, square or round. The only stocks I like better on a J frame are the round factory combats. Jeff Last edited by 22hipower; 12-13-2020 at 06:29 PM. |

But which grip maker do you get the certificate from? I personally don't prefer the target grips as they come. I always reshape and shorten them: And if I shorten them enough, I make a filler piece for the butt and backstrap. Showing L shaped filler piece: These are shortened with some bulk removed from the bottom backstrap area on this Chiefs but not so much wood removed to need the filler: __________________ |

Is this a house or a carry gun? Barrel length? I'm a big fan of the factory targets. But they tend to make concealment harder. So I only use them on 3 or 4" J-frames which will be more likely carried in a holster rather than a pocket or purse. |

It would seem that the short-barreled J-frame guns were designed for concealment. That purpose is well defeated when larger stocks are installed, even if the main intent is to make the gun easier to handle. One would be better off going to a K-frame revolver. I can tell little difference between the round butt and square butt factory offerings as far as shooting J-frames, but here again, you probably trade off a little concealability with the square butt. That may not matter to some. Opinions and hand sizes vary. |
